At the yearly Shrove Tuesday held at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Idimu, Lagos on March 4, 2025, the Diocesan Bishop of Diocese of Lagos West, the Rt. Revd. Dr. James Odedeji in his sermon urged the Clergy and Workers in the Diocese to be beacons of light as the 2025 Lent commences. He said everybody likes light because of its revealing attitude. He highlighted and spoke on how to have a meaningful life, ministry and to be a beacon of light.
Firstly, we must be thankful for the past, present and future. According to Bishop Odedeji, gratitude is the best attitude anybody can have and that ingratitude affects performance and cuts life short. He encouraged everyone to consider the joy the Lord God has given to all of us quoting from 2 Corinthians 9:15.
Secondly, shun spectator's attitude but participate. The Diocesan said spectators are always contending, clapping, complaining, criticizing and comparing and that this year everyone must engage in participating in what the Lord is doing.
Thirdly, be forgiving. Bishop Odedeji emphasized that whoever is not forgiving is hurting himself. He encouraged the clergy and workers to learn to forgive in advance and avoid grudges and anger.
Fourthly, do not compare yourself to anybody. He urged the Clergy to be competitive but never to compare themselves with anyone and that God knows what He is doing to position everyone for greatness. He has plans for everyone and He would fulfill His plan in His own time.
Lastly, apply self-love. Bishop Odedeji said nobody should kill himself for anybody and that everyone should take care of himself. He further stressed that whatever will prolong one’s life, one should hold on to it. Be generous to others but do not forget yourself.
The Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before the Ash Wednesday which is the commencement of Lent.
